How can I seek legal istance in Alberta? (human rights)?
My wife works in Fragrances at a major department store. Last night just before closing, a theft occurred in her department while she had stepped away to ist a fellow co-worker. Two security guards ran after the thief and returned unsuccessful. One of them approached my wife rudely and asked her for her name so he could report her as she "wasn't doing her job" and wasn't "attentive" to what had just occurred. Her manager stepped in and agreed that he had no right to speak to her in that manner! My wife believes that these security guards have been targeting and scrutinizing staff regularly rather than doing their job to prevent thefts. She also admits that they are quite aggressive towards staff of visible minority and feels their interactions to be rather prejudicial. I would like to know if there’s any civil rights organization in Canada that my wife can refer and submit a formal complaint against this individual. She has already filed a complaint with HR but it seems that these security personnel are contract workers and taking this through her HR may not be as affective as going through proper legal channels. Thanks!
