Why didn't Europeans just set up a slave society in Africa instead of spending a lot of money shipping them to?

Why didn't Europeans just set up a slave society in Africa instead of spending a lot of money shipping them to the New World. Wouldn't it have been more efficient to just have colonized parts of Africa and not have to deal with the triangular trade?
